INTRODUCTION:

The main aim of this workshop is to attract researchers from all areas
associated with modelling languages for knowledge-based systems (KBS). We
are also interested in establishing relationships with researchers from
other specification languages in the (wider) software engineering area.

This workshop is the seventh in the series of workshops on KBS modelling
languages. In recent years the scope of the workshop has extended its
original focus on KADS languages to cover all areas of knowledge
engineering related to KBS analysis and design. Papers from previous
workshops and information on research groups that have participated
regularly in KEML are available on the WWW, at URL
ftp://swi.psy.uva.nl/pub/keml/keml.html.

WORKSHOP TOPICS

Papers submitted to the workshop are expected to cover one or more of the
following topics.

- KBS modelling languages (formal, informal, operational)
- Integration of formal and informal KBS specification techniques
- Integration of methods and languages for different activities in the KBS
life-cycle
- Problem-solving methods for KBS
- Reusable KBS components (e.g. domain ontologies, problem solving methods)
- Integration of methods and languages for conceptual modelling in KBS and SE
- Semantics (static and dynamic) of modelling languages
- Verification and validation of KBS
- Tool support for any of the above topics
- Case studies and evaluation of KBS methods and languages

In particular, in addition to the 'traditional' KEML papers describing
research advances in the aforementioned areas, this year we especially
welcome papers describing practical experiences with the use of KBS methods
and languages in commercial/industrial applications. It is important to
note that these application-oriented papers should not merely describe the
results of a KBS project, but are expected to contribute to the evaluation
of specific KBS methods and/or languages.

HANDS-ON SESSION

Besides the more general part of the workshop, we will reserve a part of
KEML '97 for a hands-on session where participants in the workshop will be
able to try out a number of KBS modelling languages on a small example.
The aim of this session is twofold. On the one hand it will provide the
attendants to the workshop with direct experience of several modelling
languages for KBS. On the other hand it is hoped that this session will
provide useful data points to compare and contrast different approaches to
knowledge modelling.

The modelling languages to be tried out during the hands-on session will be
selected by the workshop organisers from those proposed by members of the
KEML community. People who are interested in presenting a modelling
language at the hands-on session should contact the hands-on session
organiser, Niek Wijngaards (niek@cs.vu.nl), as soon as possible.
Proponents of languages chosen for the hands-on session will be asked -
nearer the time of the workshop - to produce i) a handout of about 6-8
pages describing the main aspects of the proposed language and ii) a model
of the sample problem in the proposed language. More information on the
hands-on session can be found on the WWW, at URL
http://www.cs.vu.nl/~niek/keml/.

FORMAT

Contributions are invited in the form of a full paper (max. 20 pages), an
extended abstract, or a statement of interest. The title page should
include name, affiliation, and e-mail address of the contributor. Papers
will be judged on their contribution to the discussion, and some will be
selected for presentation. Electronic submission (in Postscript or RTF) is
highly encouraged. Papers should be sent either by e-mail to
e.motta@open.ac.uk, or by FTP to kmi.open.ac.uk in directory
pub/enrico/keml97/incoming/ (with an email note to e.motta@open.ac.uk when
the paper is transferred).

SUBMISSIONS

Papers, abstracts, or statements of interest should be submitted
electronically before October 11th, 1996. Invitation letters and reviews
will be sent by e-mail no later than November 22nd, 1996. Camera-ready
copies should arrive at the address below by December 12th, 1996.
