Jim,
I don't disagree with anything in your last note. I agree that
a lot of people have been working on these and related issues,
and that we should learn from all of the approaches and adopt
whatever seems appropriate.
In fact, I think that the distinction I was making between abstract
models and the real world can help to resolve some of the disputes.
Some of the disputes have resulted from people blurring or
confusing that distinction.
