Inference under Varying Resource Limitations

Reference: Horvitz, E. J. Inference under Varying Resource Limitations. Knowledge Systems Laboratory, 1987.

Abstract: We present research on the control of inference tradeoffs under condidtions of varying resource availability. We stress the importance of using context- dependent knowledge about the costs and benefits of alternative inference strategies to tailor inference to the task at hand. In this regard, we discuss the representation of preferences of system users and the assignment of mearsures of utility to attributes of computational performance.
