Abstract: We describe a system that facilitates the use and sharing of declarative domain knowledge stored in relational databases. The PENGUIN system models domain-dependent relationships among the normalized data elements of a relational schema, and uses these relationships to reconstruct and cache semantically meaningful objects for browsing and updating by users. The methodology has been implemented to provide immunogenetics researchers with easy access to and an intuitive view of encoded knowledge required for planning tasks, while protecting the semantic integrity of the underlying data at the relational level. We discuss the theoretical foundations, the operational features, and the implementation architecture of the system. The significance of this methodology with respect to other approaches is also addressed.
