Abstract: We are constructing a visual programming environment for authoring clinical- trial protocols. The environment enables clinical researchers to organize and describe entire research protocols so that this information can be incorporated into a decision-support system. Several types of diagramming tools can be used to model the appropriate problem-solving methods, the medical background information, and the structure of the individual protocol. We have designed our environment with a five-layer architecture and a collection of compilers for various visual languages. This design permits ready interchange of software modules and facile coordination of different visual languages within the same system.
