Abstract: Participatory design is an emerging method for the development for user interfaces (UI) in which the user is involved in every step of the design and implementation process of an application. To explore the use of the participatory design methodology in the clinical environment, we have applied participatory design to the development of a UI for VentPlan, an application to assist in the management of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) who are treated with a mechanical breathing device (ventilator). In this paper, we present the steps taken in the design process and describe the evolution of the interface.
