Abstract: By representing explicitly the knowledge that underlies the selection of process-control actions, decision-theoretic models provide significant potential advantages in the context of heuristic process control systems. In this paper, we examine the limitations of implicit models of choice in such systems, and we describe an explicit, decision-theoretic approach that facilitates reasoning, explanation, and knowledge acquisition. We demonstrate this approach in the context of a particular application, abstracting from this demonstration to emphasize the broader benefits of integrating techniques from artificial intelligence and decision theory in heuristic process control systems.
