Abstract: Stanford University School of Medicine introduced a formal medical informatics training program in 1982. All students are candidates for M.S. or Ph.D. degrees and approximately two thirds are also trained as physicians. This article describes program history, curriculum, and philosophy. It also summarizes several lessons from our first six years. The program is oriented toward research training and the development of academic leaders for the emerging disciplines.
