Evolution of a Knowledge- Based System for Determining Structural Components of Proteins

Abstract: Data interpretation requires expertise. In every field of science, the process of understanding large amounts of data from complex instruments requires applying knowledge that is the "inverse" of the predictive equations that govern the generation of the data. One specific instance of this problem in biochemistry is the task of identifying the relatively large and rigid substructures within a protein that provide the level of description known as its secondary structure from data derived from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments.
