Abstract: SightPlan is an expert system to assist project managers in laying out temporary facilities on construction sites. Temorary facilities are located and removed from site during the consruction of a project. Determining their location is a spatial arrangement problem, that is, a problem of positioning objects in a context, under constraints. We chose the BB* layered blackboard architecture to express and reason about the layout model and arrangement constraints. A simple prototype has demonstrated that this environment is appropriate to model site layout design, so we proceed with knowledge acquisition and refinement of SightPlan.
